Elections to the Seniors' Council – Candidate Presentations

Elections for the VR Seniors’ Council will take place from March 31 to April 3. Elections for the council take place every other year. Three representatives will be elected to the council, and all VR members aged 65 and older are eligible to vote. The deadline for submitting candidacies was March 20. A total of 11 individuals submitted their candidacy.

VR Pay Scales Increase as of 1 April

Pay scales according to VR collective agreements will increase by 0.58% as of 1 April, with the increase being paid at the end of April/beginning of May. This is the conclusion of the Wage and Condition Committee for collective agreements in the general labour market.

Resolution of the VR Board Regarding the Government’s Efficiency Proposals

The VR Board warns against revising labor market legislation with the aim of increasing the authority of the State Conciliation and Mediation Officer, as can be inferred from the proposals of the Prime Minister’s working group on efficiency in public administration. Furthermore, the VR Board considers it unacceptable for the government to propose outsourcing labor market oversight and reducing the rights of public sector employees.

Collective Agreement with Elkem Rejected

The collective agreement between VR and other unions representing employees at Elkem Iceland was rejected in a joint vote of the unions, which concluded at noon on Tuesday, March 18. A total of 58.12% voted against the agreement, while 38.46% voted in favor. About 3% abstained. The electoral register included 151 members, with a voter turnout of 77.5%. The unions will now discuss the next steps.

VR Calls for Candidacies for the VR Senior Council

The role of the VR Seniors’ Council is to advise the VR Board on policies concerning VR members aged 60 and older. According to Article 2 of the Senior Council’s rules of procedure, the council consists of six representatives, appointed every other year, with a two-year term.

VR’s Annual General Meeting to Vote on Merger with Leiðsögn

At VR’s Annual General Meeting on March 26, 2025, a proposal for the merger of VR and Leiðsögn – Tourist Guide Union will be presented and subsequently put to a vote. The agreement between the two unions from June 2024 stipulates that the merger will take place once it has been approved by the annual general meetings of both unions in 2025.

The elections for the VR Chairperson and Board for the 2025–2029 term, which took place from March 6 until 12:00 noon on March 13, 2025, have now concluded. A total of 9581 votes were cast. The voter registry included 40,117 VR members, resulting in a 23.88% voter turnout.
